(1) PRE-DEPARTURE. Undergraduate students from my Intro to Iberian Studies class at the University of Hawaii (LLEAS 360C) researched and presented one of the sites to be visited as their final research project.

Recommended Readings

1. Planting Rice, Harvesting Slaves. To learn more about the role of Spain and Portugal in the slave trade. Recommended by fellow pilgrim Mr. Richard Jones.

2. The World’s Religions. A good introduction to the religions of the world; each chapter is about a different religion. Recommended by fellow pilgrim Father Steve Corder.

3. I Will Be Called John. The life of John XXIII, Pope from 1961 – 1965, whose job was to carry the wounded and dead on a stretcher during World War I. Recommended by fellow pilgrim Professor Emeritus (Theater, UH) Terrence Knapp.
